3/31/14 (Opening Day) - Mets vs. Nationals
Mets lose 9-7
Starting Pitchers: Gee + Strasburg
Seats: Upper deck, first base side
New Mets season, new Jimi Hendrix walkup song for Lucas Duda, new mayor throwing out the first pitch. A lot of Mets-themed winter gear and a lot of optimism packed the stadium on this cold and exciting Opening Day, as well as a lot of love for Ralph Kiner, who was honored in a pre-game ceremony. Strasburg pitched well, but Gee was better, fiercely taking down the Nationals even without notching a lot of strikeouts, gunning down 15 batters in a row at one stretch. Lagares and Brown both homered, and we were one out away from a win, but the injured Bobby Parnell couldn’t get it done. The rest of the bullpen couldn’t get anyone out, except for Valverde, who pitched with unholy fire. David Wright netted a 2-run homer in the 10th, but it wasn’t enough to add to the Mets’ record of Opening Day wins.
